Report of 1987 AGM

THE AGM AGAIN

November 5 - Guy Fawkes Night - and as a brilliant full moon rose over the Adelaide hills, an authoritative, powerful voice calmed the restless Tregenza masses with a loud, clear baying of those tactful wards Shaddup!!! and the 1987 AGM was underway. Attendance was described as being the largest in years and so enthusiastic were members that an election had to be held to fill the committee positions. Benjy received a sympathy card which seemed appropriate in view of his changed situation in life now that Peter Allen has stepped down as President. The appropriate votes of appreciation were moved and individual efforts acknowledged as per the Annual Report. The Club's sponsors came in for special mention and the importance of their support to both social and sporting activities was noted. 

On the more serious side of the AGM, it was noted that the Club's financial position is quite sound despite the fact that it was a year of heavy expenditure. Major expenses included the bath, roof repairs and other repairs and maintenance to the building. On the sporting side of things the efforts of those involved in the Rugby, Juniors, Cricket and Hockey teams were cited and the strengths of each group were commended. Special thanks went to the 50th Anniversary Committee for their work during the year. 

Two outstanding Rugby personalities were honoured by the meeting when President Peter Allen called for a minute's silence in memory of Sid Feldheim and Ken Grayling. Sean Beaton was voted a life member of the Club - apparently the first time a member has been given that honour for sporting achievements. Sean was also elected as a Selector. 

The meeting recommended that Colin Runge be Patron and he accepted. Colin is a founder member, past first grade player, past president and a life member of OCRFC. He was also president of the SARU. Subject to acceptance, Andy Short was elected Honorary Solicitor and it was left to the Committee to appoint the Vice-Presidents.

The meeting was preceded by a Happy Hour and followed by congratulatory and celebratory libations which appear to have continued for some time. In short, a good time was had by all!

"Having just received the latest copy of 'The Tregenza Times' I felt compelled to put pen to paper on a couple of points.  First (and not seriously) what do they mean by ???OC? MY membership will remain current even if distant!

However, irrelevancies aside, I was extremely pleased to read the list of trophy winners at the Presentation Dinner. I felt that each recipient was a thoroughly deserving one with some of the players' trophies extremely interesting in that they demonstrated the progression made by many of our younger players. Well done to those people!

As far as the administrative trophies were concerned may I just say a heartfelt 'hear hear'. Being involved fairly closely (as you know) with all the recipients, I was well aware of the amount of work they put in. I should make a special mention of Bob Stafford-Lee for his organisation of that momentous dinner which will remain a highlight of my life.

Finally to what is the main reason for this letter. Although, naturally, it was not unexpected, I must admit to a sense of loss with the impending retirement as President of Peter Allen. His achievements over the past three year particularly (bearing in mind his previous history of contributing) has been, I feel, the base upon which Old Colls can build a substantial future. Our closer relationships with "the Council, the SARU and the other clubs are a direct result of his unfailing efforts.

His will, of course, be a big pair of shoes to fill but having had such a groundwork laid, the next incumbent will be able to concentrate on his own ideas more quickly. My deepest congratulations go to Peter for a job well done.
