OLD COLLEGIANS: History of the club to 1966

An article written in 1966 for the 21st Anniversary Re-union Dinner

Old Collegians Rugby Football Club was formed in 1937 as Prince Alfred Old Collegians by Jack Hastwell, Monty Bennet and others and is the third oldest Rugby Football Club in thisState. The original jumper was maroon with a P.A.C. crest. In 1940 during World War II it combined with North Adelaide prior to competition ceasing from 1941. In 1945 Len Perkins and others reformed the Club on renewal of competition play, and in 1947 the club was renamed Old Collegians, celebrating this by being runners-up in "A" Grade Premiership in 1948.

In 1955 the Club changed to new colours of maroon and navy hoops. Consolidation followed with no highlights until 1956 when the Club took out the "A" Grade Premiership, and in 1958, he first year of the S.A. (Elizabeth) 7-a-sides, it was runner-up. In 1959 it repeated it's feat and again took out the "A" Grade Premiership and also was runner-up in the Neilson Cup Final.

1963 to 1966 has been the Club's most successful period when it has reached the finals of all Grade Premierships and been in the Davey and Neilson Cup Finals, culminating with an "A" Grade Premiership in 1965 when the team first wore the new Club crest, the S.A. (Elizabeth) Premiership in 1966, defeating Eastwood, N.S.W., and were runners-up in the Neilson Cup Final in this year - a good record which we aim to continue. We who are here tonight maintain the excellent soial side the Club has been noted for throughout it's life.
