    Old Collegians' Website History

Changes to this site:
Sept. 2004:  Our ISP, e-access is bought out.  We have some e-access problems that aren't getting resolved so migrate the site offshore.  It's a pity to have to do that but it's all about a service where disk-space isn't such an issue and where support and downtime are treated seriously.  This site offers 1Gb of disk-space

2003: Updates only were made in 2003 while revelling in the relatively unlimited disk space.  Most of the creative content happily thieved and transposed from Kim Evans' work on the newsletter.
The website's counter publisher wanted payment for the use of their software so I wrote a quick site counter in php, a language I'd like to use more on the website in the future especially with regards to merchandising.  Rather than change all references throughout the site from 'index.html' to 'index.php' I put a redirection on the html file to the php file.  Unfortunately this seemed - logically of course I should have realised - to stop the web crawlers getting into the site so I lost all the search rankings.  In January 2004 I took out the php code and renamed the file back to what it was while changing the re-visit from 21 days to 5 days in the hope the web spiders will start to re-index the site sooner rather than later.

July to December 2002:  Difficulties with ISPs.  Eventually settled on a local Adelaidean ISP who provides 150 Mb of disk space free. A summary of the difficulties with ISPs ...

July 2002: Changed the front page.  Took out sprites used for internal links (onmouseover & onmouseout) and replaced with text having added two anchor classes (a.menu:hover etc).  Moved most common internal links to the top as a cascading menu.  Had everything cascading - had to take out bottom level pages in cascade.  File size increases from 11Kb to 22Kb. Speed ok on my slow machine.

April 2002:  Forgot how to re-index the search - Run: http://www.oldcollegiansrugby.org.au/cgi-bin/search/search.cgi?Mode=Admin
Added it here in case I forget again and as a future reference for anyone else.  Is password protected.

March 2002: Had to amend the font-sizes again - small/medium/large is relative only to the default settings in Explorer.  Adopted point sizes.

January 21st 2002: Solved long-standing problem with colours not being recognised and Netscape pages looking different to Explorer pages.  I had a number of errors in the style file - took out the <style> & </style> tags, changed the colour definitions from RGB decimal to RGB hexadecimal.  Also changed the font-sizes from explicit point sizes to the more relative 'small', 'medium' and 'large'.   I found the errors only after having background problems with another website I was working on yesterday.

December-January2002:  I have the source code for the search software that I've been using and comparing with the original external search engine for some time now.  With the source code I can specify that .shtml files can be included as part of the search.  As well the large number of files makes it difficult to maintain them now without going back to SSI.  I have created both headers & footers that are Include files - this means that the logs and footers can be maintained via a small group of files, all in the _include directory (each file is documented as to it's use).  The CSS file has also been amended to include a specific style for the links only.  Also in this upgrade, I changed all the links to go to the top & bottom of each page rather than clutter up a cell to the left of each page.

28th June 2001:  Installed a message board.  A few difficulties.  It is essential that the file & directory permissions are correct - despite what the documentation says, all directories must be set to permission level of 777 (refer CHMOD on FTP).  Not helped by a bug in the FTP program which doesn't show changed directory execute permissions, even after refreshing.

28th June 2001:  The search utilities that run locally are either too slow and/or don't find all references to a search item.  After noticing that a commercial web help site used an off-site search indexer I figured if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.  Installed a free search engine but carries the publisher's logo.

21st June 2001:  Search utilities won't go through the page reference in applets - take out all the applet buttons and replace with plain hypertext links

19th June 2001:  Too much effort involved in writing a site search applet so look at a number of applets available over the Internet.   Some require periodic site indexing which is unnecessary and amateurish, others are adware and others require payment.  None appear to search through files with an shtml file suffix. Two freeware applets look good.  One in particular uses only two class files.  Both of these however don't search on shtml files.  Use a code decompiler to get the source but they have been compiled on older versions of Jdk.   At this stage of my Java knowledge it's too time consuming so I have taken out the SSI footer code and replaced them with the source html code and then renamed all files from *.shtml to "*.html.  I may revisit this another day.

May 2001: Given copies of "Old Collegians Rugby News" for the years 1962 to 1964 and a few up to 1969.  Periodically ad in articles and information from these.  Go to Adelaide Advertiser photo library for photographs.  Ordered a quantity from their archives.

15th April 2001: Given access to copies of Tregenza Times' for 1985-87 and the programs for the 1966 and 1987 Dinners all of which were a large source of information.

22nd to 25th February 2001:  Website migrated to oldcollegiansrugby.org.au site.  All references to the main page index.htm changed to index.html to fit with our new ISP's requirements.

29th & 30th December: SSI introduced as a means of displaying a common footer on each page - htm files changed to shtml.  All directory & files names changed to all lower case to avoid case problems on links when renaming files.

22nd & 23rd December: FrontPage borders replaced.  Also various minor mods.  Recipients of Aussie Sports Medals added to News and separate History page.

5th & 6th of December: More mods to main page, additional functions added to style sheet.  Mouseover functions added.  The intention is to move away from FrontPage dependency.  Currently using FrontPage for the left border links, the bottom border, the glowing hover button applet and the yet to be used comments, forum & search pages.  FrontPage slows the site down and takes too much control of how the site is to be presented.

16th-19th November: Style sheet added, common headings now not part of FrontPage borders added & code cleaned up ; nearly all the pages modified.

5th/6th November 2000: Photos added (Juniors Presentation), some screens tidied up, Junior team summaries added (for 1999), Junior objectives added.

Prior to 7th October: History expanded, photos added, year 2000 info moved to history.

17th September: Year 2000 junior history page redesigned. More images added to the junior pages for the year 2000. Other images added mostly for the juniors.

19th August 2000: More images added to the juniors pages for the year 2000 - U16, U12, U8

22nd July 2000: Juniors' Premiership league tables added - access from Juniors' results

21st July 2000: Seniors' Premiership league tables added - access from Results  page.

10th July 2000: Added link to Amazon UK. 5% of sales go to the Club. Sfter some months, eventually took it out.

5th July 2000: Changes made to html to make incorrect direct address references incorrectly created by Frontpage to the correct relative addresses.  This history info taken off the frontpage and added to this website history page.

4th July 2000: Problems with the thumbnail images in the Ms College 2000 and the 1998 & 1999 Junior Gallery.  Getting either the full images or the thumbnails refer back to the source computer (affectionately known as 'zog').  Will fix when logic tells me why & how ...   (Needed to refresh FrontPage rather than select via the search facility)

1st July 2000: News re Friendly match for the U12's on the 8th July; news re Junior 7-a-side; U8's Draws; Roy Crawford; Hamish Cranna, Juniors' photos from 1998, 1999 and for this year added to the Junior Gallery, West End trophy photo added to Awards History.

20th May 2000: Additional links to other rugby sites added

13th May 2000: More history added, modifications to some of the links, women's draw information added, more newsletters added.

7th May 2000:  Other changes since the 30th of March : Some history pages added, results updated.

April 2000:  The Old Collegians' Website was created and hosted at the personal webpage address of  www.chariot.net.au/~phorne;   The ISP, like most, was not willing to host any of the FrontPage Extensions that allow the more active options that can be found on paying sites so the site has to remain an html site.  ARU are planning to host all clubs sites in the near future which should allow for an extension to the options available.

Difficulties with ISPs - July to December 2002

I had time during long telephone conversations with support people to type in the conversations.
Rather than bore you with that, a summary:

ISP 1:
Problem: They insist on maintaining a log file of 15 Mb which blows out my 50 Mb disk space and crashes the site after I tried to upload an updated front page - result being deleted front page and an inability to copy up the new one.
The conversation with the help desk people:
I explain the problem - also explain that this happened last year and the filesize was reduced.  Also explain I'd asked for it to be deleted or at least an upper size imposed.
Help desk person comes back to tell me the problem is caused by a log file.
Me ... Yes, I just told you that was the problem.  Can I have it removed, please?
Them ... No.  But we'll consider it if you send in a written request.
Me ... OK,  Look, I have a site that's crashed.  Wouldn't you agree that a 15Mb log file, that I don't want, never asked for, is taking up the space I'm paying for and can never be read in its entirety should logically be removed.
Them ... It's company policy.  Are you saying you refuse to abide by company policy by refusing to send a letter?  I'm typing this in now.  You refuse?
We went into an infinite loop.  No If ... Go To    (Fortran)

ISP 2:
Based in another city.  Keeps log files on their own part of the disk. Agreed there would be no downtime. Exchanged details - website stuff goes to me, costs to a sponsor.
The site disappears.
I ring for the login details and password.
The details are in the mail.
Me ... OK, that's fine, but I'd like to restore the site.  Would you e-mail me the details.
Them ... No, it has to go by mail.
Me ... Why?
Them ... Security.
Me ... What's so secure about the mail?  Send me the login details on one e-mail and the password on another.
Them ... No.  Can't do that.
Me ... Why not?
Them ... Company policy.
Another loop.  No If ... Go to.
I changed to ISP 3.  Three weeks later I got the letter.  They'd sent it to the rugby club's post box - the secretary got it and opened it at the next board meeting.

ISP 3:
This is free hosting.  150 Mb.  Young guys.  No suits.  I'm the first they host.

A revisit to ISP 1 on behalf of a client:
Me ... I've just uploaded a website but no response.  Is there a difficulty?
Them ... You mean FTP'd it?
Me ... Yes, FTP, if you like.
Them ... Where did you FTP it to?
Me ... The root directory.
Them ... Are you a web developer?
Me ... Well, yes, I do some.
Them ... Well you should know it doesn't go there.
Me ... OK, why should I know it doesn't go there?  I'm following the written instructions you sent to my client and there's no mention either way of where it should go.
Them ... It should have gone to the site_html directory.  All websites go to site_html directories.
Me ... Well, no I disagree.  Not all websites.  <I move all files to the site_html directory as we speak>
Them ... Name some.
Me ... Excuse me?
Them ... Name some.
Me ... Why should I?
Them ... Because you said they don't.
Me ... Well, your ISP for one, before I pulled out.
Them ... They did not.
Me ... I don't have time for this.  The site works now.   I can see ...... <disconnected by ISP>
