Cricket
Old Collegians' used to boast being part of a fine Cricket competition
during the summer months.
From the "Old Collegians Rugby News":
18th December 1962:
"In our last issue Ken Meek suggested that we should organise a cricket team to play
a few friendly matches during the summer. This suggestion was taken up with some
enthusiasm by the members and Ken has now organised a tentative fixture list of three
matches and there will pssibly be others. The games which have been tentatively
arranged are:
Sunday, 6th January - v - Burnside
Sunday, 20th January - v - Southern Suburbs
Sunday, 3rd February - v - University
As some slight amount of organising has to be done before these matches can take place,
Bert Rogers and Ken Meek have suggested that those members interested in playing should
meet at Bert's place one evening ..."
10th January 1963:
On Sunday week, 20th January, the Club cricket team plays the second match of the season,
against a team from Southern Suburbs R.U.F.C.
The match will be played at Bailey Reserve and will start at 10.30am Unfotunately
Bailey Reserve does not possess ideal surroundngs for a picnic match, but we have found
that the grounds in the Barossa Valley on whih we have played in the past are booked out
for some months ahead.
We suggest that the Bailey Reserve venue can be made more attractive for the ladies if
those members who have them bring along beach umbrellas and picnic chairs (or rugs).
A keg will be present for the occasion to provide refreshment for those attending.
The cost of the day per male will be: Beer-drinking players - £1; Non-drinking
players - 10/-; Beer-drinking spectators - 10/-.
There will be no charge for the ladies.
The team for this next match is:-
Ken Meek (Captain), Bob Barker, Edward Suttell, Geoff Holdich, Bill Jones, Colin Bartlett,
Jack Burgess, Jim Daly, Pascal deering, Rod Essery, Warren Thompson, Bert Rogers (12th
man).
Reserves:- Derek Robertson, Norm Diener, Don Jones ("Taffy")
Umpire:- Cyril Holdich
Scorers:- Jim Diack, Howard Clay
Bar Steward:- Morry Bell
10th January 1963:
Result of First Match
Last Sunday a large number of club members and supporters were present at the first
cricket match, also played at Bailey Reserve, and saw Old Collegians defeat Burnside
R.U.F.C. by 22 runs.
There were some notable performances by our players, including Jack Burgess' 29 runs in
the first innings, which included only one single, and Colin Bartlett's 5 wickets for 5
runs in Burnside's first innings.
The best partnership of the first innings was 39 runs for the tenth wicket between Bill
Jones and Colin Bartlett. In our second innings Ken Meek and Geoff Holdich hit up 53
for the seventh wicket.
30th January 1963:
In their last match the team was defeated on the first innings by Southern Suburbs who won
by 2 wickets. Old Collegians scored 86 and Southern Suburbs scored 89 for the loss
of 10 wickets.
The bulk of our score was put together by Norm Diener (53 runs) anf Jack Burgess (15
runs). In the bowling Jack Burgess took 6 wickets for 20 runs, Ken Meek too 2 for 7
and Edward Suttell took 2 for 8.
In the second innings Collegians scored 69 for 7 declared and Southern Suburbs replied
with 8 for 53 at stumps, so this to some extent consoled the team for their first innings
loss. The main scorers were Edward Suttell (16), Bill Jones (16) and Ken Meek (12).
Ian Marsh took 2 wickets for 8 runs, Deering had 1 for 4 and Bert Rogers took 1 for
14.
2nd October 1963:
The Club is again organising a cricket team to play some friendly matches during the
summer. If any member would like to play, always or occasionally, please give your
name to Rod Essery or to Howard Clay. Rod is acting as Cricket Secretary, in the
absence of Ken Meek.
If any member would like to assist in keeping the score at these matches both the existing
scorers, James Diack and Howard Clay, would be grateful for their help.
Last year we were unable to get a suitable ground for the annual fixture - the President's
XI versus the Immediate Past President's XI. This year Rod has taken the precaution
of getting in early and has booked Nuriootpa Oval for this event. The date - 16th
February 1964.
31st January 1964:
The Club has challenged Woodville Rugby Club to a social cricket match. This is to
be played at Bailey Reserve on Sunday, 19th January, starting at 10.30am.
The purpose of the venture is to have a Club Ladies Day and Picnic. The cricket is
expected to be decidedly informal by nature.
A keg will be provided for the necessary refreshments and all members and ladies are asked
to bring a picnic lunch. Past experience has shown that beach umbrellas, picnic
chairs and rugs are appreciated by the ladies.
The players: Jack Burgess, Bob Burgess, Geoff Holdich, Sid Feldheim, Hugh
Williamson, Warren Thompson, Bob Henderson, Hartley Brimelow, Brian Rogers, Maurie Bell,
David Wright, Merrick Goodwin, Sandy Fox, Colin McDonald, Peter Cox, Bill Jones, Bob
Barker, Edward Suttell, Norm Diener.
The umpire: Cyril Holdich
The scorers: James Diack, Howard Clay
