Tourists surrender unbeaten record
By Graham Croker
14th December 2001
Sydney University Football Club overcame the first hurdle of their European
rugby union tour with a 1413 win over Oxford University.
Flanker Bo Paraha and fullback Nigel Staniforth scored tries, with five-eighth
Brock James landing two conversions. Oxford replied with a converted try and two penalty
goals.
The tourists also accounted for Swansea University in the second game, winning
70 in freezing conditions. But they lost their unbeaten record in the West Country,
going down 1312 against Exeter University at The County Ground.
The win was a triumph for Chris Malone, who captained Sydney University to the 2001
Sydney Grade premiership before venturing to England to play for Exeter.
Sydney will play Henley Hawks at Henley Rugby Club before leaving England for
Belgium. The tourists will visit the Australian Division War Memorial at Polygon Wood, the
Hill 60 Memorial from World War I, Tyne Cot Cemetery and Menin Gate for a Last Post
Service before spending four nights in Amsterdam.
Rugby re-emerges on the agenda with a match against Amsterdam University at
Sportpark de Eendrachton on 14 December. The tour then moves to Venice for a
match against the local Petrarce Rugby Club at Silea Stada, Treviso, on Tuesday 18
December. Finally the tourists travel to Rome for three days of rest and recreation before
departing for home on 22 December.

"Uni teenager top of class"
Sydney Uni 34, Easts 16
" Brock James made such a spectacular debut for Sydney University that he is likely
to split playing time with skipper Chris Malone in the premiership push.
Only 19 and in his second year out of Scots College, the former Australian Schools
fly-half got his chance when Malone's corked thigh prevented him taking the field for the
second half of the game against Easts.
University's line breaks promptly doubled, largely due to James' acceleration, step and
chang of direction.
He emphasised his precocious talents by setting up a try for halfback Scott Stumbles with
a slashing break and booted a couple of goals from wide out.
Malone has contributed 179 points to date and the likelihood is that in future he will
play in the first half and rookie James will come on later.
In a clinical performance, second-placed University scored five tries to two to make it
difficult for the Beasties to make the playoffs.

University's captain Chris Malone left the field at half-time with a bruised
thigh and was replaced by Brock James, a five-eighth nurtured by University for his pace,
attacking skills and goal-kicking.
