From the Touchline

Playing a strong Edinburgh team, Old Collegians were beaten 14-6 in what seemed to be a well fought game last Saturday (12th May).  In the opening minutes of the first half, Edinburgh made a good start when they scored from a penalty and managed to keep this three point lead throughout this period.  Failure to make good use of Breusch's kicks from ½ backs may have prevented Collegians from leading at half time.

For the first part of the 2nd half Adrian led Collegians into the attack and for the most part kept Edinburgh outclassed.  Although a try was given away by Collegians, Adrian opened up the game by getting the ball, out-running two opponents and scoring a try for Collegians, which he subsequently converted.

Edinburgh now led by only one point and collapsed to allow 3 penalties to be awarded against them, only 1 of which Adrian managed to do any good with though.   Collegians were now in a math winning position with a lead of 2 points and only had to play for time, but Edinburgh were awarded a penalty and the tables began to turn.

After Edinburgh had scored these 3 points bad positioning of one or two of the Collegians' forwards allowed Edinburgh to score another quick try and conversion to sew up the game.

Old Collegians showed a general marked improvement on their previous match.  Their passing and tackling was almost as good as it was when Glenelg were beaten a fortnight before.  My place of honour this week goes to Lyn Adrian, who was not only the best player last week, but who has done all the scoring for the last two matches.  Barker and Breusch were the best of the other backs.  Bartlett was good, although patchy.

The best of the forwards, who in general far too slow, were Mort and Robertson.

To have any hope of being in the top six at the end of June, Collegians will have to win at least two of their next three matches.  What about it?

The lineup for that game was:

Northwood Evans Langridge
Mort Robertson Wilson Watkin
Burgess
     Breusch
        Bartlett
             Brown
B.Rogers Barker Adrian
McQualter
