Matches of 14th June 1980 - 1sts vs Port Adelaide, 3rds vs Roseworthy

We have finished the first round. The Club's result has been quite good, with all our
teams in the top four. We have had players in the state team, and also players out with
the inevitable injuries. This has given the selectors grey hairs, but the teams have
generally managed to weather this.
Now the State commitments are over, and the second round is starting. We've got a long way
still to go till we reach the finals, but with a bit of hard work, WE'LL BE THERE.
The first grade last week beat Brighton in the first game of the cup round, and so we look
expectantly towards this week when we play them at Brighton.
On the social side of the club, the auction night has been set as the 5th July so have a
look around the home to see if there's anything you want to get rid of. Last year the
auction made a lot of money for the club as well as providing a lot of entertainment- I
wonder if Zorro Farrah will be there again? We're also running a Calcutta on the first try
scorers in the third test, Australia vs "All Blacks". This will be drawn and
auctioned on the 28th of June at the clubrooms. Thanks to a little get together at the
club last week, a number of wives and members have got together to provide the meal on a
Saturday night. If we want to keep this facility, then we must all be willing to pitch in
and help with the washing up and clearing away. In the short future we hope to run a
Mississippi River Boat Night, so keep a look out for that. Thanks must go to a group of
dedicated people who came down to the club last weekend after the players and members
meeting to clean up, you did a great job, thank you.

To conclude, we have had a reasonable season up till now, but we all know we could have
done better. Let us all put that little bit more in and start thinking about the
big one. We need fifteen members of a team to win the grand finals not fifteen individuals
carried by four or five. Training starts at 6.30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, make it your
responsibility to get there and to make it worthwhile. Anyway, GOOD LUCK for next

1st Grade
Cup Final Bailey Reserve 3.00 pm
With the wind against us at the start, Port Adelaide opened the scoring with a penalty
goal in the first four minutes of the game. They followed this up with a try against the
flow of play in another few minutes to lead by 7 points. Bruce Ward opened our credit
sheet with a good kicked penalty. 7-3. Owen Clarke, diving over a ruck, gave Port their
next chance at scoring, but the kick dropped short. Ports continued to attack, but a good
clearing kick by Denzil relieved the pressure. Play continued just inside our half, with
Beaton being missed at five-eight. A very good run by Guy Lithgow from a well won ruck,
and good handling by the backs, ended in a try to Guy after he chipped the ball over the
opposition winger. 7-7. Bruce's attempted conversion went wide. From the kickoff Port
Adelaide attacked our line. A penalty to us, saw Denzil swing the ball away from the
forwards, to the Port winger. He was only just caught. Kim Dow, offside at the lineout,
saw Port kick another long ball through for a penalty. 10-7 down. A couple of lineouts saw
play oscillating across the field, around the centre line. Another penalty to Port
Adelaide, but Denzil gathered the attempted kick to bring us back to half way.
A penalty to us this time, but Denzil failed to find touch. A penalty against us and
not retiring fast enough saw another ten yards gained and the penalty goal made possible.
Gerade bounced the attempted kick off the cross bar and through the posts. 13-7. Two
strong spoiling charges by Wasea caught the Port half back twice and we went into attack.
Good push in the rucks gained us a scrum 10 metres out but Port cleared. Half time scores
13-7. We kicked off to start the second half, with the wind at our backs. An attempted
field goal, by Ports after some good ground gaining play, resulted in our 22 drop out. A
good clearing kick stopped the Port Adelaide machine for the moment. Followed up by a
sensible kick from Denzil, saw us go into attack. Ports stopped us and play went back to
the centre of the pitch. A penalty to us and Denzil found touch inside Ports 22 metre
line.
A knock on by Port resulted in our scrum 35 metres out. Port cleared from the free
kick, due to our early strike. From the lineout Guy made good ground but could not break
through. Good pressure by O.C. saw us on their 22 metre line. Good attack took us 10
metres and across the field. Port cleared gaining 5 metres. A penalty to us but Bruce
missed the penalty goal. A very good run and centre kick by Denzil, very nearly saw us
score, but the ref. said they grounded first. Although we didn't seem to be able to
advance we weren't losing ground! Ports handling-in the ruck gave us another penalty but
Bruce could not find the posts. However Ports 22 was on the full and good running
from the scrum, saw us scrumming down 5 metres out. Kev Walden got caught out on
the wing with no support and they got a penalty. Another penalty and we were defending
again. Ports attacked but we came out of it with a 22 drop out. Mick Byrne hit the marker
but Biggles covered to give us another 22. Denzil covering well kicked us into attack and
found touch 22 metres from their line.
Owen Clarke came off and was replaced by Tony Nugent. Good attacking play by Tim Farrah
was stopped when the ref. pulled him up for a late tackle after he chipped the ball. Guy
stopped the Port winger with a very good tackle, after three other people had missed. We
tried to penetrate the Port defense but to no avail. Port gained the ball and ran well,
backing up to score and crush our hopes of winning. Port’s conversion bounced off the
cross bar. 17-7. A late tackle straight after the kick took us into attack. An attempt by
Denis Hayden ended in a five metre scrum. We kept attacking and eventually Wasea picked up
the ball and scored. Bruce converted on the whistle. 17-13.
THIRD GRADE
vs Roseworthy Cup Final 1.30
THE MAGNIFICENT THIRDS DO IT AGAIN. CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE CUP.
The opposition ran on without Maddog - a devastating blow as the spectators had to put
up with him. A long kick from O.C. started the game. We attacked their half until a
Roseworthy player, handling the ball in the ruck and gave away a penalty. At the half way
line John Douglas' kick hit the cross bar. Roseworthy attacked our line but mistakes by
them took the play back to the half way line, two good tactical kicks from Ray had us
attacking again.
A penalty 25 metres out saw Ray Murphy's kick go through the posts. 3-0. Play occurred in
our half but a disputed decision gave Roseworthy a penalty which they elected to run. A
couple of dropped passes meant we didn't clear the ball. Another penalty a metre inside
our half way attempted again by J. Douglas, but a scrum resulted from us being offside at
the kick. Play stayed in the middle of the field, with both teams evenly matched.
Crago cleared from our line, with a long kick which was forced for a Roseworthy 22 drop
out. Another good tactical kick by Roger Davies saw us on their line. A good set up by
Dave Radke saw Roger Davies go over for our first try. Not converted 7-0. Some good play
around the middle of the field saw the possession see saw. In the next 10 to 15 minutes we
had two penalties against us but Roseworthy failed to capitalise on these and play
continued in the middle of the field. Pete Farrah grabbed the ball and set up another try
for full back Roger Davies. Ray missed the conversion 11-0, at half time. The second half
started with O.C.'s against the wind and the kick off forced us into a 22 drop out.
John Rich tried to bounce the ball off his chest soccer style after having a Panadol
for last night. A very good run and long pass saw Roseworthy with a three man overlap and
only fail to score because of a magnificent Ray Murphy ankle tap. A penalty against
Roseworthy relieved the pressure. Roseworthy's backs attacked again and again looking very
dangerous. A good shirt front by Pete Farrah saw the ref give a decision against O.C.
and they kicked the penalty. 11-3. Roseworthy attacked again but our defence proved
enough. Play again see-sawed in our half. Another shot at a penalty by Roseworthy missed.
Roseworthy had another shot at a penalty which this time saw points on the board. 11-6.
Another penalty by Roseworthy saw O.C.'s desperately fighting to maintain their lead which
they did till the end. Won 11-9.
