Junior
Falcons 2008
On 26 September 2008 the Junior Falcons, South Australia's Junior
(18-20 years) State Men's Rugby Team, will travel to New Zealand to take
on competitive rugby union teams in Wellington and the surrounding
regions.
The players have been selected to represent their State and will play
in 3 challenging games over 10 days. The Junior Falcons will also
further embrace the rugby experience by attending an Air New Zealand Cup
game, mentor the South Australian State Under 14 team and visit a Maori
Marai.
The young men of Old Collegians have done the Club proud by having
the greatest representation of any of the Clubs in SA, mirroring our
contribution to the Black Falcons. The following players from Old
Collegians have been selected in the Junior Falcons team: Chris
Bartlett, Cleve Batten, Xander Evans, Todd Grant, Brad McDonald, Charles
Neate, Henry Nutt, Tom Nutt, Will Sadler and Rory Sheppard.
The Junior Falcons are still doing a wine fundraiser and will be
selling a sensational BBQ throughout the finals so make sure you stick
your hand in your pocket and support the future rugby talent of SA.

After literally years of planning we managed to get a
couple of great new honour boards up in August. They're still only about
90% correct but at least they're up and we're working on the finer
details.
One board is devoted to our illustrious life members.
The other records the names of Collegians who have played 15 seasons or
more of senior rugby for the club. We're calling these hallowed souls
the "Quindecim" (it's Latin for fifteen, pronounced
Quinn-DEC-um).
NONE of you responded to our previous calls for
nominations for the board so you'll understand if we're cranky about all
and sundry coming up with bright ideas now that the board is on the
wall! Seriously though, any corrections/suggestions should be emailed to
us at
kim@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au which will (eventually) be
incorporated on the boards.
Thanks to Stewart Douglas for all his hard work in
designing and installing the boards.
The final training night for this season will be held on
Wednesday 27th August 2008. (Exception: any teams who are in the finals
training will continue as your coaches direct.)
To celebrate the season we invite you to join us in a Sausage Sizzle to
be held after training, 7pm for U8s and 7.30pm for all other teams.
Sausages will be $2 each and all proceeds are to support
our players who have been selected to represent the state in
rugby. We are also holding a raffle tickets, available from
20th August at $2 each or $5 for 3, to contribute to this fundraising
initiative. Prizes 1st a signed rugby ball by the Australia
2008 Sevens team and 2nd is a Phillips DECT Windows Live Messenger phone
and 3rd a first aid kit.
Please help us to support our players who have this
fantastic opportunity to play other talented teams in the state tours.
The evening will be scheduled as last year with the 8s to
start off the evening followed by the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and last of all
the under 18s. This gives the parents of the younger ones the
opportunity to not have to stay too long with the younger players
although those that choose to stay and enjoy the club atmosphere are
more than welcome.
Please come along to the last training session for these
mighty 8’s and 10’s who have had a brilliant season and made massive
progress with their individual and team core skills.
9th August. Come back to the Club at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start
to test your knowledge and support the OC Juniors.
Form your table of 8 ($120) and RSVP: simonelp@bigpond.com
Tom Farrah was over from Melbourne on the weekend of the
19th of July and played with the 3rds. Tom Farrah is Tim Farrah's
son. Tim left for Melbourne some years back so Tom would have been too
young to have played for Collegians', however the Farrah family are
extensive and have had a long connection to the club - refer to the page
on Dinny
Farrah, for instance.
And to some photos
of Tom playing in the 3rds.

70s
Night!

Graham
Raymond got up with the band and belted out a great rendition of
Desperado. The typical array of 70's regalia was worn. If anyone has
photos of our Punk Treasurer or Disco B-Rad, please email them to paul@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au.
Thanks to the Gold House for a great night! And you slackers from Blue
House? Thanks for nothin'!

July – CLUBROOM OLYMPICS
Stay
at the Club after our homes games against Uni and Brighton for Old
Coll's version of the Olympics. It will be House against House in Table
Soccer, Pool, Ping Pong, Wheel Barrow Racing and Buck
Hunter, but with our own special "drinking rules".
There
will be a BBQ dinner and we'll also be showing the Wallabies
v South Africa
on the big screen.
July 5th saw a return of the Collegians' curry cook-off.
Judges were Jim Jones, Candice, Ian Walker, stewie and Jon Collins, as far
as I could work out, unless they were just pretending to be as an excuse
to eat and look important while doing so.
After some delay, due to the soporific sense of decisiveness shown by the
judges, the winners were Ian Barwick for best curry and Ian Barrie for
hottest curry. There are loads of photos of the occasion in the picture
gallery for July 5th.

Just when Hamish thought he'd forgotten all about his old company, and
Collegians' solid sponsor from the distant days of Alan Turin, his
corporate jackets that have long lingered downstairs, have become
fashion-items and were sported on the 5th of July by both Stewart Douglas
& Ben Hamer. As Hamish says, pity the company didn't last as
long as the jackets. Or was that 'the company didn't last but those
jackets did'? Photos

UNDER 16s & UNDER 18s
SET A GREAT EXAMPLE
The club was were delighted to receive an email
recently from a referee complimenting us on our U16s &
U18s:
"It was an absolute pleasure to referee them as they played
the game in the true spirit, their discipline was great
throughout the entire game... I did speak to both teams after
their games to pass on my thanks for the discipline shown all
day but I would like you to let them know that they are a credit
to your Club, their Coach & most importantly themselves. I
look forward to seeing them continue on thru the coming years
where I'm sure they will do the Club proud."
By contrast, we have recently needed to give a
formal apology as a result of the conduct of another Old
Collegian on the sideline towards a young referee. Please make
sure your conduct is the sort we receive compliments about, not
the sort we have to apologise for.
<-- Please be civil to all officials, even ones
that look like this.

We had seven barrows entered. Hamish judged them for Best Pimped and
the winner went into the final race. The other six teams had to race in
heats with the best eventually meeting the Best Pimped in the final.
Teams entered were:
Team Tonka
Gypsy Barrow
Team Redneck
Smurfy Barrow
Blood Barrow
English Barrow
Yellow Brick Barrow
Yellow Brick Barrow won the Best Pimped.
Smurfs won the first race (Smurfs v Rednecks v Gypsies). The Rednecks
who missed a chicane had to double-back to finish the course but
nevertheless beat the Gypsy Barrow which was pink and comfortable but slow
and squeaky.
Blood Barrow won the second race (Blood v Tonka v English). It was
close between Blood and Tonka, but the English Barrow broke. Welsh
workmanship was blamed.
The Smurfs narrowly beat Blood Barrow in the Semi, and trounced the
Yellow Brick Barrow in the final (thank partly to the YBB toppling over at
one point in the course).

Mark Pickard has accepted an invitation to join the
board of the SARU. Mark is involved in rugby and business for many years
in Adelaide occasionally putting the boots on in Old Collegians’ lower
grades. Mark has been very supportive of and generous in developing both
the profile of our game and increasing participation levels in Adelaide.
Mark will bring passion and drive as well as his wide range of contact
and resources to the Board. Mark is a life member of OC.

Alex Rokobaro, the son of Ben (Bulla) Rokobaro who
seemingly inhabits most club team photos from the 1970s and is still
playing, and a former Old Collegian having come up through the Juniors,
is now playing for the national Fiji team and will be up against Tonga
on the 17th of May.
Refer to the separate page on Alex.
We'll be following his career with considerable interest ......

Old Collegians Under
16s 7s team undefeated
Just a quick note on the recent successes for the Under 16s squad
over the last three weekends including the Sevens gala day last Sunday
held at South's Ground. For the last three weekends the u16s have been
playing in a series of Sevens matches organised by the SARU culminating
in the Sevens gala. Weekend one saw the boys draw against Burnside A, a
very entertaining game, and trounce Burnside B with some excellent
running rugby even from the forwards! - cracking results given the
school holidays and a turn out of only nine players. Weekend two the
boys defeated Burnside A 17 to 12, again a close match with the result
going to the last minute; superb commitment and excellent defence were
clearly the difference. The second game of the weekend saw the boys put
on an great display of running rugby against Souths winning 28 to 0 and
all concerned now looking forward to the Gala tournament to follow.
Sadly we would be missing our two newly enrolled islanders for the Gala
day plus an injured Vern Lee, all three not included in the picture below.
Onto the Gala weekend. We posted wins against Souths A, Vikings B and
most pleasingly Onka's A. Sadly the boys missed out on the final
on a points count-back as there were two other undefeated teams on the
day. The most pleasing aspect of the last three weekends has been the
courage, support play and resolute defence that all the boys have shown.
The coaching staff and parents are immensely proud of the boys and we
clearly have a good mix of experience, new boys from the under 14s last
year who got stuck in really well and some converts from rugby league
which is always pleasing.
We are now working towards the state trial games on Saturday and I am
very confident that we will have more than a few of the lads picked to
go onto the next stage.
I'd personally like to thank Tony Herve, Guy Barrett and Michael
Barrett for their support to date. What a good way to start things
off.
Well done boys !!

Undefeated U16 7s team 2008
Head coach David Linder-Patton, Manager Michael Barrett. Undefeated in
7s this season.
Congratulations Boys! Undefeated for the sevens comp, sad to
miss out on the final on a points count but you showed great spirit and
courage.
We have state trials on Saturday 3rd of May at Onkas, so we have to
put in a good weeks training, this will be a full team so yet another
chance to show how good we can work as a team and hopefully get a good
number through to the final trial games on 31st May.
I am extremely proud of your team work, commitment and no small
amount of aggression! You should be rightly proud of yourselves and we
have a great chance this year.
See you all on Monday and let’s make sure we all work for each
other.
Yours in Rugby

VODAFONE ADELAIDE BLACK FALCONS
This Friday the Vodafone Adelaide Black Falcons fly to
Darwin to commence their ARS campaign. We wish them the best of luck
this weekend and for the tournament ahead.
We are proud to announce that the squad this weekend
includes the following Old Collegians: Christian Tedge, Jon Collins, Ben
Hamer, Ben Suttell, Richard Czeglik and Simon Burmester. Well done,
fellas.
Next weekend (10 May), the Falcons play Tasmania at
Brighton (6.30pm). Your next chance to cheer on the home town boys is
when they play NSW Country on 31 May. More details will be provided in
the coming weeks.
As for those of us left at home, as always there will be
a bit of a squeeze on us with so many of our 1st XV away. I want to
thank all our players in advance for the commitment, courage and
determination you routinely show at this time of year when asked to play
up a grade or out of position in order to fill the holes the Falcons
leave behind. The fact that we can lose half our first grade and still
field four competitive senior teams is terrific. I look forward to
seeing you all step up.

Congratulations to Jon and Emma Collins who are happily
expecting their second Collins-Suttell hybrid bundle of joy.
Congratulations also to Richie and Esme Jasko and to Belinda Wade and
husband Michael Lindo who are also likewise in the family way. Confirmed
that there's something in the water.
4th September 2008:
Ben Hamer & Cat are
bolting to Lewes Rugby Club in Sussex (http://www.lewesrfc.org.uk/)
on the 4th of September. Good luck to you both.
And Rory Sheppeard has bolted off to England as well.
Saturday 5th July:
Farewells for Philippa
"Pip" Shell & James Hayden
Pip is off to the border country of England (for those
geographically-challenged, the border between England & Scotland)
and James is off to Cheltenham in Gloucester in the west country of
England, where he assures me they don't speak with a west-country
accent, that is, not like my own rellos, then.

The 17th of May also saw the farewell of Nacho & Angel, our two Spanish boys from Seville who have played three or
so games with us this season, pictured below with Kim Evans. They're
both off travelling, with the Flinders Ranges being the next stop for
them as they head home, the slow-way.

Tom Horne has been offered a place at the RMC Duntroon and started in January 2008.
Tara Naige is heading off to
Tonga to work as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development doing
health promotional work for the next 12 months trying to help with
weight (and resulting heart disease and diabetes) problems, running
fitness sessions and pool work and so on. A fantastic experience
and no doubt Collegians' will be contacting her for some brief stays in
a tropical paradise. Tara will set up a .mac website up so that we
can keep up to date with her blog and photos. Good luck, Tara.
