Training - 19th March 1962
From the "Old Collegians Rugby News", 19th March 1962
Our President and Coach has now completely recovered from his illness and is out and about
again. He has now taken over the running of the training sessions. He has told
us that he is disgusted with the attendance at training so far. Last Tuesday night
there were only 15 players at Linden Park Oval for training and of these 6 were new
members of the Club. We asked Bert his reaction to this and he said "I have to
neglect my work and private affairs in order to act as Coach of the Club and I am not
going to do that unless the players are prepared to train solidly and support me."
The Club has a great potential this season; we have a considerable number of players of
proven ability and experience, both among the old and the new members. In addition
we have been fortunate to persuade Bert to coach the team. Bert is one of the best
Coaches the club has ever had and has already, three seasons ago, demonastrated that he
has the ability, keeness and drive to coach a team to premiership standard. Bert
also has faith in the Club, so the players must demonstrate that they have faith in him by
training regularly. If the Club is to win matches every player must be fit and must
be keen, and the only way to achieve this is by training regularly every night.
The player who does not train is only expecting his team mates to carry him on the field
and he becomes a drag on the side. It is not fair to your fellow players or to Bert
Rogers if you do not train. No member can expect to hold a place in the
"A" Team unless he is fit and keen - experience alone is not enough.
Training is at Linden Park Oval every Tuesday and Thursday night at 7.30pm. Let the
Coach and Selectors see you all there from now on. Don't YOU be the
"bludger" who loses matches.
