Honour Boards

After literally years of planning we managed to get a couple of great new honour boards up in August. They're still only about 90% correct but at least they're up and we're working on the finer details.

One board is devoted to our illustrious life members. The other records the names of Collegians who have played 15 seasons or more of senior rugby for the club. We're calling these hallowed souls the "Quindecim" (it's Latin for fifteen, pronounced Quinn-DEC-um).

NONE of you responded to our previous calls for nominations for the board so you'll understand if we're cranky about all and sundry coming up with bright ideas now that the board is on the wall! Seriously though, any corrections/suggestions should be emailed to us at kim@oldcollegiansrugby.org.au which will (eventually) be incorporated on the boards.

Thanks to Stewart Douglas for all his hard work in designing and installing the boards.

UNDER 16s & UNDER 18s SET A GREAT EXAMPLE

The club was were delighted to receive an email recently from a referee complimenting us on our U16s & U18s:
"It was an absolute pleasure to referee them as they played the game in the true spirit, their discipline was great throughout the entire game... I did speak to both teams after their games to pass on my thanks for the discipline shown all day but I would like you to let them know that they are a credit to your Club, their Coach & most importantly themselves. I look forward to seeing them continue on thru the coming years where I'm sure they will do the Club proud."

By contrast, we have recently needed to give a formal apology as a result of the conduct of another Old Collegian on the sideline towards a young referee. Please make sure your conduct is the sort we receive compliments about, not the sort we have to apologise for.

<-- Please be civil to all officials, even ones that look like this.

Tom Farrah

Tom Farrah was over from Melbourne on the weekend of the 19th of July and played with the 3rds.  Tom Farrah is Tim Farrah's son. Tim left for Melbourne some years back so Tom would have been too young to have played for Collegians', however the Farrah family are extensive and have had a long connection to the club - refer to the page on  Dinny Farrah, for instance.
And to some photos of Tom playing in the 3rds.

Mark Pickard

Mark Pickard has accepted an invitation to join the board of the SARU. Mark is involved in rugby and business for many years in Adelaide occasionally putting the boots on in Old Collegians’ lower grades. Mark has been very supportive of and generous in developing both the profile of our game and increasing participation levels in Adelaide. Mark will bring passion and drive as well as his wide range of contact and resources to the Board.  Mark is a life member of OC.

Alex Rokobaro

Alex Rokobaro, the son of Ben (Bulla) Rokobaro who seemingly inhabits most club team photos from the 1970s and is still playing, and a former Old Collegian having come up through the Juniors, is now playing for the national Fiji team and will be up against Tonga on the 17th of May.
Refer to the separate page on Alex.
We'll be following his career with considerable interest ......

VODAFONE ADELAIDE BLACK FALCONS

This Friday the Vodafone Adelaide Black Falcons fly to Darwin to commence their ARS campaign. We wish them the best of luck this weekend and for the tournament ahead.

We are proud to announce that the squad this weekend includes the following Old Collegians: Christian Tedge, Jon Collins, Ben Hamer, Ben Suttell, Richard Czeglik and Simon Burmester. Well done, fellas.

Next weekend (10 May), the Falcons play Tasmania at Brighton (6.30pm). Your next chance to cheer on the home town boys is when they play NSW Country on 31 May. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.

As for those of us left at home, as always there will be a bit of a squeeze on us with so many of our 1st XV away. I want to thank all our players in advance for the commitment, courage and determination you routinely show at this time of year when asked to play up a grade or out of position in order to fill the holes the Falcons leave behind. The fact that we can lose half our first grade and still field four competitive senior teams is terrific. I look forward to seeing you all step up.

Departures & Returns

4th September 2008:

Ben Hamer & Cat are bolting to Lewes Rugby Club in Sussex (http://www.lewesrfc.org.uk/) on the 4th of September.  Good luck to you both.

And Rory Sheppeard has bolted off to England as well.

Saturday 5th July:

Farewells for Philippa "Pip" Shell & James Hayden

Pip is off to the border country of England (for those geographically-challenged, the border between England & Scotland) and James is off to Cheltenham in Gloucester in the west country of England, where he assures me they don't speak with a west-country accent, that is, not like my own rellos, then.

Nacho & Angel

The 17th of May also saw the farewell of Nacho & Angel, our two Spanish boys from Seville who have played three or so games with us this season, pictured below with Kim Evans. They're both off travelling, with the Flinders Ranges being the next stop for them as they head home, the slow-way.

Tom Horne has been offered a place at the RMC Duntroon and started in January 2008.

June 2008 - After the first jump

Tara Naige is heading off to Tonga to work as an Australian Youth Ambassador for Development doing health promotional work for the next 12 months trying to help with weight (and resulting heart disease and diabetes) problems, running fitness sessions and pool work and so on.  A fantastic experience and no doubt Collegians' will be contacting her for some brief stays in a tropical paradise.  Tara will set up a .mac website up so that we can keep up to date with her blog and photos.  Good luck, Tara.
